Wildwood School

In 1954 the new Wildwood School opened with our class as 5th graders. It was for me a big change from the Whitefield School. Wilmington was growing fast. Baby boomers were crowding the schools, and many of the schools were getting old and in need of renovation. We had a real gym and a clean new cafeteria. The classrooms were bright and the air was fresh (In contrast to the stench of the tannery across the street from the Whitefield School). For me there was the added benefit that it was directly behind our house, so the walk to school was a very short one through the field instead of the mile and a half walk to the Whitefield.
